Boracay Island: The Ultimate Tropic Getaway

Do you ever ask yourself how would it like to be in a place where blue skies meet the turquoise water and you are in between supping the freshest coconut water wearing the cutest tropic swimwear while feet was buried in a chalky white sand?

After the disrupted life caused by lockdown due to the global pandemic. I am sure most of us cannot wait to wander this summer. Looking for an ocean breeze? Well, travel no far coz an islet in the central Philippines lies one of the most underrated island to visit in the archipelago.

Just a 190-miles flying distance from Manila, an island called Boracay will leave you in awe the moment you landed to its beauty. It will definitely satisfy your island craving after days. The island welcomes a surge of tourists everyday which you cannot blame as Boracay offered a truly remarkable experience in a lifetime. Packed with different water sports activities and luscious eats, I am pretty sure you will not run out of things to do in this tropic getaway vacation.

The following things to do in this blog is purely based on experiences that we have enjoyably done. We did stayed for six days in the island to have a slow break in life and for those days we have stayed, I felt the connection and warmth welcomed by the locals. They are highly affected by the global pandemic and it saddened me to see these locals suffered the most. The tourism most especially is recovering so have patience for the local vendors who keep following you offering their goods to sell. I know that it is a bit frustrating but decline them in a most kindest way. Understand that they are trying to make money especially that nowadays tourists are slowly coming back to visit their humble and prestige island.

It is not complex to love the island at all. The island’s tranquil nature and the very laid back people are what makes Boracay Island incomparable to the other island in the Philippines that I have been to.

About Boracay

Before the parties and the crowds Boracay has its early beginnings. For centuries Boracay was formerly undiscovered in the Province of Aklan. Its hidden gem is situated in the Western Visayas and was only visited by sporadic adventurous rovers. Back then Boracay was Hard to get to as no regular planes, boats or buses to hop on.

Like every provinces and islands, it also have their original settlers – the “Negritos” or the Ati Tribe (indigenous people dwellers in Panay Island) who flourish through coconut farming and fishing during 1960’s and 1970’s. At that time bartering is mainstream which they traded goods to businessmen in Aklan and in the neighboring island of Panay in return for rice and other commodities that they might need. A Negrito ethnic group, the Ati are genetically related to the “Mamanwa” of Mindanao, “Batak” of Palawan and “Aeta” of Luzon.

Life was simple back then. The island did not have electricity until 1992 and the surrounding was only lit by tiny lamps. So imagine every sunset, Boracaynons lounging on the beach with a stunning sunset and is more remarkable by the stark contrast on an island by those tiny lamps. Those were the great old times that old folks remember and cherished up to this date. Early settlers look back to the island’s unspoiled beauty and tight-knit community. Those days are long gone. The influx of tourists are so rampant that nowadays Boracay even morn the night.

During 70’s the island made its fandom internationally as two movies were released featuring the beauty of Boracay. Later that year in 1978, the infamous German writer Jens Peter wrote a book where he solely called the island a “paradise on Earth”. It wasn’t long before travelers and tourists made their way to Boracay and indulge themselves to its unspoiled beauty, which then turn the island into one of the world’s most renowned beach destination not just in the Philippines but to the whole wide world.

Crowd covered the most part of the island. Businesses made its chain and so as the slam of trash. As globetrotters ceaselessly come to pillage the beauty of Boracay, the island is slowly in wailed. Several programs and rehabilitation took place from different branches of offices locally and internationally. But the big changes took place on the 4th of April 2018 where the Philippine government announced the closure of Boracay Island for rehabilitation up to six months starting the 26th of the same month. Pollution is one of the main problems of the island, which is mainly cause by the lack of proper sewage and waste management system.

Protestants made its way all around as they were against the closure for six months. Fast forward, after six months of bayanihan (a communal unity) with the help and concerned individuals on rehabilitation and closure to the public finally the people can enjoy its splendid beauty once again. Coming with a new system and regulations strictly enforced, Filipinos and international travelers can enjoy the island with a delight admiration. The battered island may never completely recovered, but just like any scarred individual, Boracay’s beauty continues to flourish and draw attention and approbation.

Best Time To Visit Boracay

Traveling to Boracay is doable all year because of its canicular days and infrequently afflicted by hurricane. That is why its peak season to visit the island occurs several times during the year (e.g., Chinese New Year, Christmas, New Year and Holy Week). Boracay weather comprises of two seasons. The high season is named Amihan (i.e., November-May) and low season which is Habagat (i.e., June-October). While almost guaranteed with the cheerfulness of sunshine throughout the year, tourists take the shot to sojourn this prominent destination and enjoy the island to the fullest possible.

Things You Can Do In Boracay

1. Take a walk along the beach from Station 1 to Station 3

Station 3

If you love photowalk like me while strolling, you will definitely understand that it is a leisure that you will love doing it repeatedly wherever you are. Doing it in Boracay is such a pleasure as you will witness the everyday routine of locals. The fine white sand that you cannot resist while those baby waves are gently splashing your feet as you enjoy the serenity especially while doing it before sunrise. The glowing stars at night is also a romantic way to witness while walking along the beach. It is the cheapest yet one of the best thing to do when in Boracay. Beside, it is also the best way to do after devouring those luscious food for a faster digestion and reduce bloating.

2. Book for a land tour

The popular choice to drive you around the island is the electric passenger tricycle or commonly known as e-tric. Do not get discourage about this battery operated tricycle as the drivers make sure that they have fully charged batteries before going for a tour with their guests.

Typically hiring a tricycle costs 500php ($10) good for 4-6 person and is still negotiable down to 400php ($8). You can also opt to rent a moped if you want to have more control of your time. The latter might also be a better choice if you are traveling solo. We have several drivers that we have in contact and only Kuya Richard stands out on dealing tourists without ripping off your wallet. He is very considerate and amicable. Here re their contact information:

  • Kuya Richard 0950-210-5650
  • Kuya #2 0929-169-5455

Sinagpa Beach

Best beach to experience the crystal kayak.

This is my personal highlight of our land tour. I am glad I did not skip the kayak crystal as I had so much pleasure of happiness. The guide do not have any posted amount as they rely on the tourists tip, so I suggest to tip good as they really did a good job taking videos and photos while you are paddling and showcasing your best poses. You can message my guide in Facebook messenger for an advance booking and to make sure you get him to take your photos – John Rey De Juan III.

Cujos Keyhole

Rock formation on the east side of Boracay in the newly developed area (i.e., Boracay New Coast developed by Megaworld). You will have the panoramic view of the private beach as your tricycle driver followed the road going to keyhole. The main thing you can actually do here is take photo of the infamous rock formation as your backdrop.

Ilig-iligan Beach

Unknown to most foreign tourists this heavenly sandy stretch lies on the North-East Coast of the island. You can visit this beach after your pictorial at Cujo’s Keyhole as this can be pass on the way back. Only few rovers made a stop on this beach. And because of its unpopularity, this beach is actually lack of amenities so make sure to bring the necessary things (e.g., beach mats, sarong, snacks and water) to make your visit more comfortable and relish the quiet outing. So if you want to get out from the crowd, definitely consider this beach.

Puka Shell Beach

True to its name, puka sea shells once inhabited the beach. Fact: Puka Shell Beach’s original name was Yapak Beach, named after its Barangay. “Puka” is the Hawaiian word for hole which refers to the naturally occurring hole in the middle of these rounded and worn shell of a sea snail. Puka Beach is Boracay’s second longest beach at 800 meters wide. Water currents here are stronger than the White Beach, which will in favor for body boarder enthusiasts. Local vendors offer you free beach mats if you purchase any drinks on their menu – that include fresh coconut which of course I got without any second thought. Local women also sell puka shell jewelries. The beach is free to access for all.

Diniwid Beach

A beautiful smaller white sand beach is just a 10 minute walk from the famous Station 1 white beach. The stunning Diniwid Beach is less crowded beach that will offer you the value of peace yet still being in close proximity to the more active White Beach in the area. I also find it picturesque especially with those naturally bend coconut trees while the bangka (unmotorized native watercraft) parked underneath.

Tambisaan Beach

If other much famous beaches in Boracay are filled with modern firm, Tambisaan Beach is far different from that. The sand here is not as grainy and white. The water is not as clean due to the nearby port and abundance of fishermen. These are just some of the reasons why drivers won’t suggest this beach towards their guest.

We are on our 5th day and we need a beach where we can acquaint local culture and can relax where no single tourists lounging around as possible. Tambisaan Beach perfectly fit the definition. But since this is the closest location to another islet called the Crocodile Island (which is also great for snorkeling) they usually include Tambisaan Beach to embark their guests who are doing the island hopping tour. But as long as they do not staying too long that is totally fine for us. Of all the beaches we’ve visited this is probably the only beach that we literally feel the exclusivity. I did enjoy my banana cue and samalamig (traditional Filipino sweet chilled beverage that usually include jelly-like ingredients) while staring on the peaceful horizon.

3. Do The Island Hopping

There is nothing more exciting than exploring Boracay in style and comfort of a 5-6 hour island boat tour. You will have the chance to visit various white sand beaches, coves and islets. You have the choice of renting a private boat or join in an island hopping tour equipped with professional captain and attentive staffs. We opt for the private boat which is smaller than the tour boat, that way we have more control of our time.

Boracay Island Hopping Tour typically costs 1,500php ($30) and still negotiable down to 900php ($18). This usually includes buffet lunch and entrance fee is usually excluded which you may have to pay separately. The boat can accommodate 25 – 45 people depending the boat size. The private one on the other hand cost 2,000php ($38) without the buffet and entrances. The more people in your group the cheaper you split the total price.

I highly recommend Kuya Bong to be your guide if you opt for the private tour. He is knowledgeable and a very self-effacing person. Contact #: 0946-664-5850

Balinghai Beach

Much smaller than white beach where Boracay comes to party, Balinghai Beach is an exclusive haven away from it all. This is also the new and only location (making sand castle on White Beach is strictly prohibited since it was opened after the six month rehabilitation) where you can experience taking photo with the sand castle made by locals (you can even request to put a date and your names on the sand for a photo souvenir). They rely on your tips so make sure to tip good as they are really talented on their craft. This beach is free of entrance.

Balinghai Rock

Unlimited snorkeling here! This is not the best spot to snorkel but good enough to cool yourself off while watching those colorful fishes enjoying the ocean underneath.

Crystal Cove

A private island resort located near the southeast of Boracay lies a must visit when you are in an island hopping tour. For 300php ($6) entrance/pax you will enjoy its breathtaking vast ocean view, fun strolling through vivid greenery, wandering through caves and snorkeling. There are plenty of picnic spots that any group can take advantage to use. There is no store on the island so tourists are advised to bring their own meal if they plan to have picnic while touring the island resort.

4. Try Some Boracay Water Sports

To maximize the fun while you are in Boracay, let those adrenaline rush be freed. Boracay is highly profit-oriented and is crammed with different water sports for dauntless rovers. Here are some of the fun and a little bit edgy water sports that we’ve tried.

Boracay Jetski

Since it was my first time jet skiing I felt nervous at the same time had a great time while our water vehicle is swaying on the medium high waves. Price vary; 15-minute Jet Ski is 1,830php ($35) and for 30-minute is worth 2,300php ($45) depending on the water sport company.

Boracay Parasiling

One of the best and a must to do amongst all water sport. Petrifying at first but you gotta get hold unto it and eventually you will be rewarded the bird’s-eye view while enjoying the breeze from the top. For 1,570php ($30) you will enjoy the 15-minute experience alone or with a friend from above.

Other Watersports you can avail to continue the fun are banana boat ride, Boracay fly fish, Scuba diving, Helmet diving, Boracay mermaid photoshoot, Boracay Mermaid swimming and Boracay UFO & Hurricane.

5. Keep Your Appetite Ready At All Times

Along with its pristine shoreline and scenic attractions, the island is also a food haven. It has a handful of restaurants that will offer you a variety of cuisine ranging from local Filipino favorites to international dishes (i.e., Asian, Italian, Latin and Spanish food). Here are some of our food hopping adventures during our trip in Boracay;

Paraiso Bar and Grill

This restaurant is located at Boracay Uptown where live band perform every night. One of the best eatery for seafood feast. They also offer cooking service for the desired way of cooking on your meat/vegetable of your choice.

Aria Cucina Italiana

It is one of the most dined restaurant in Station 2. Delectable Mediterranean-inspired dishes are their main course (they even have a wood fire pizza oven). With its cozy tropical interiors and central beach front location in D’Mall, this Italian restaurant is hard to miss.

Bistro Valhalla Boracay

Carnivores rejoice! This restaurant offers a wide selection of steaks, ribs and other assortments of savory meat dishes. Enjoy its generous tasty portion as well. Cons: they take so much time before they serve our order.

Halo Mango

For your mango dessert craving, let Halo-Halo Mango do the satisfaction. Mango lovers will definitely love their ice cream and sorbets here.

Aria Gelato

They got the best gelato in the island – personal favorite! Believe it or not but we’ve been here every night after dinner and if I don’t have the best photo of a product that means they totally hooked me. I am so elated that every time we come here I just dig in my gelato right away and forgot that I need to take good photo for this blog aesthetic.

Sunset View Restobar

Located in the Paradise Garden Resort Hotel complex, Sunset Restorer is a halal-certified that is quite spacious and features a classic interior. They offer buffet on breakfast and dinner. They also have live entertainment during weekends upon dining.

Sababi Paluto

This eatery is more on a homey style and definitely every Filipino would love to dine. Fresh seafood are displayed outside the eatery and they offer cooking service with a separate fee depending on the way of cooking you wanted and veggies you want to put in. Before finalizing everything you ordered, clarify them the prizes coz every cooking service of a different dish are not free and it has a corresponding different prices on it unless you re ordering on their regular menu. Cons: expensive

Bun Bun Boracay

If you are craving for some Asian-flavor, don’t wander far as Bun Bun eatery might be a few blocks from your accommodation. They offer handmade bao buns and they are tasty and savory. They serve it steaming hot too. This is just a small stall but they really pops out on the road because of their bright red Chinese decorations of their upfront store, it is hard to miss!

CYMA Boracay

My personal favorite restaurant we’ve dine-in on the island. Ten years of greek expertise, CYMA offer simple yet distinct rich flavors. Their roka pasta won’t disappoint you. Their menu was expensive yet all worth it. Customer service is topnotch and our server made sure that we are well taken care of. Do not leave Boracay without grabbing something here.

Filipino Street Food

You cannot take street food away on every Filipino’s food tripping. Wherever Filipinos are, street food will always be part of our culture and you gotta dig in with the crowd if you want to understand more of our food culture. Boracay is not really big on street food but there are few vendors selling betamax (pig’s blood), isaw (chicken intestine), adidas (chicken feet), helmet (chicken’s head) and etc. For those who are in a budget, this will definitely the answer and personally I don’t mind eating all these OG food, more fun when eating with barkadas (friends).

6. Purchase Some Souvenirs

Buying souvenir is not a prerequisite thing to do but since you are in Boracay enjoying you leisure might as well have some tokens that will remind the best time you had while you are at the island. It is also one way to show support local business in the area. Local vendors are also open for negotiating its prices. There is a lot of choices and vendors will love doing business with you.

7. Witness The Sunset

“Best Sunset Ever” – that’s what most people exclaimed the moment they set their eyes on Boracay’s sunset. It hits differently. No trip would be complete without catching the sky bleeding different colors as the sun sinks into the sea. You can missed a call from your girlfriend/boyfriend but not the most dramatic, insanely popular Boracay sunset. One of the best!

Place We Stayed… Where To Stay?

The 4km White Beach in Boracay is the island’s centerpiece. All the bulk actions can be found here. It is why the area has become the most popular spot for most rovers to book their accommodation. The stretch of White Beach is broken up into 3 sections – Station 1 (majority of luxury resorts), Station 2 (center action and mid-range lodging options) and Station 3 (more quieter and more inexpensive lodging options).

With so many options deciding where to stay in Boracay can be difficult. You need to consider your budget before anything else. For us, we stayed in Station 2 and did found a good deal in booking.com. Learn to hunt and put your best play to check every website as possible and compare the prices on who will get the best deal.

Le Soleil de Boracay

Six days of embedded happiness inside the property of this hotel, could you imagine the satisfaction I have? This hotel is the heart of everything. That means – closer to everything you could imagine Boracay life, so as the noise from the crowd, the night life banging and the pack of tourists around. But despite all of these, Le Soleil was able to give the eloquent peace that I need. Despite of the craziness outside this hotel, they satisfied their guests and are quick to attain all of their needs. Customer service is their priority or I must say, their specialty!

Like some guests, we encountered some issues on the first day we checked-in and the receptionist Ma’am Faith was able to accommodate our queries and with the help of the hotel’s manager Sir Mike they decided to upgrade our reservation from deluxe twin room to premier twin room with queen beds at no cost. And I’ll tell you the room is so sleek and above all smells the best! It was spacious and truly I am so impressed that I don’t have enough words to describe how great the room we have for six amazing days when we stayed in Boracay Island. Sure you can pick a more updated hotels around but this one feels truly like a home and a gem that you can ever have. Staying here for six days I’ve witnessed the dedication of every staff, the restaurant’s relaxing vibe, the secluded cozy swimming pool area, the breathtaking ambiance, the location of the hotel that perfectly situated on the beach and close to everything and the perfectionism of the humble Hotel Manager. All of these made me fall in-love of this place. Seriously, you gotta consider booking this hotel at any cost!

Our view from our room at night.

I am stoked. The royal treatment I experienced was fantastically exquisite. They made me and my bandit’s vacation extra special and we are totally awestruck of everything they did for us. By having Le Soleil a special mention in this blog, this is a free promotion and they haven’t paid anything to me to promote their hotel. It is on my own way of sharing our experience with them and by saying big Mahalo for their generosity to us.

Boracay Island is a gem that every aspiring rovers all around the world wanted to have a peek of its beauty. Its splendid beauty will leave you in an awe and it will make you a story teller to everybody who loves to listen your vacation story. Boracay is an ultimate tropical getaway for those who are seeking adventure and harmonious relationship with the ocean’s wave. The island has always something to offer to anyone who dare to immerse its gloriousness.
